Westminster Bank
Security Panel Variations
1850's to 1920's.

Roger Outing

Created 11th July 2012

From the 1850's the cheque design of the Westminster Bank included a security panel within which there are a range of printing variations that have not previously been recorded. This article analyses and illustrates the ten principal types that have been so far identified.  Research is on-going and it is likely that further variations will be reported. Pleasedo  get in touch if you discover any.

It should be noted that the bank had five different titles after being established in 1834 - and these are summarised in the information panel to the right. These five different titles provide the basic framework for the analysis that follows.

If you click a pic once you will have maximum magnification and will be able to see the details of the micro printing. You can move the image by click + drag and also use the slider to vary magnification - all as required.

To date these variations have been largely unknown to collectors who sometimes take the mistaken view that, apart from the changes in bank title, there is limited variation in these early cheques. As is often the case the story is in the detail.

As can be seen below there is wide variation in the colours.

  • London & Westminster Bank - 1834 to 1880

  • London & Westminster Bank Ltd - 1880 to 1909

  • London County & Westminster Bank Ltd - 1909 to 1918

  • London County Westminster & Parr's Bank Ltd 1918 to 1923

  • Westminster Bank Ltd 1923 to 1968

  • Subsequently became National Westminster Bank Ltd

  • Now known as NatWest
