 Union Bank of London
 Est 1839 with Head Office at Moorgate
 Head Office moved to Princes Street in 1844
 Became "Limited" in 1882
 Formed into Union of London & Smiths Bank Ltd in 1902
 (after amalgamation with Smith, Payne & Smiths of London
     and Samuel Smiths of Notttingham, Newark, Hull etc).
 Formed into National Provincial & Union Bank of England Ltd
 (after amalagamation with National Provincial Bank of England Ltd)
 Became National Provincial Bank Ltd in 1924
 Formed into National Westminster Bank Ltd in 1968
 Became National Westminster Bank PLC in 1980
 Became NatWest in 1990.
 Comments:  An important early joint stock bank which became part of 'Big       Five' by virtue of a well considered series of amalgamations. No cheques have    yet been seen from the first Head Offfice at Moorgate.  Earliest known reported cheques are from 1850's.



Union Bank of London, Princes Street. c1870's, Bearer, PROOF.

Black on cream, Union Bank left, printed crossing in black and an early example of this, printer & watermark = Perkins Bacon & Co. For use by Chasemore & Robinson who were private bankers in Croydon and were taken over by Union of London Bank in 1891. This is a PROOF with marks on back.
