The Bank
The National Provincial Bank of England was established in 1833 and was the first English bank to take practical steps towards establishing a national network of branches – hence the "National" in the title.  Initially the bank issued its own banknotes and was therefore legally prohibited from having any branches in London. Consequently all the early branches were in provincial towns – hence the "Provincial" in the title.

In 1866 the bank relinquished its banknote issue and was then able to open branches in London.  In 1880 the bank took on limited liability status and "Limited" was added to the bank title. In 1917 the bank amalgamated with the Union of London & Smith’s Bank Ltd and was re-named the National Provincial and Union Bank of England Ltd.  By this amalgamation the bank acquired, in a single move, a significant presence in London and this very effectively supplemented the network of provincial branches that already existed.

In 1924 the name was shortened to the National Provincial Bank and the bank took its place amongst the "Big Five" banks that had all established themselves by this time.  Although successful the bank never established itself as one of the primary banks amongst the "Big Five" and in 1968 it merged with the Westminster Bank Ltd to create the National Westminster Bank Ltd. And so the "Big Five" became the "Big Four". In 1980 the designation of "Ltd" was replaced by "PLC". In 1990 the current name of NatWest was formally adopted – an acknowledgement of how the bank had generally been referred to ever since the 1968 amalgamation.
