Great history of the origins and growth of Martins Bank Ltd.  Vol 1 details the Liverpool and London elements whilst Vol. 2 deals with all the other northern constituent banks.  Very comprehensive - not much left to find out once you have assimilated this.  Martins was taken over by Barclays in 1968 so this 1964 publication is pretty much the full story.

Official history of the Bank that also explains much about origins of banking in England. Vol. 1 deals with origins from 1694 to 1797 whilst Vol 2 deals with later developments from 1797 to 1914.  A heavy weight read and well worth it. The factual content is impecably researched from original sources and can be completely relied upon.
